MGMT 345: Cultural Intelligence in Leadership and Management is a 3-credit course taught by Dr. Whalen that blends classroom learning with an immersive international experience. The course examines how leaders build cultural intelligence (CQ) to navigate today’s global environment. Students explore theories of culture, analyze leadership practices, and develop the skills needed to work effectively across cultures. A highlight of the course is the embedded travel experience during Spring Break 2026, when students travel with Dr. Whalen and Prof. Kelly to Denmark and Sweden. This required travel component transforms theory into practice through guided tours and cultural activities, giving students a firsthand understanding of how history, innovation, and cultural values shape leadership and management around the world.

Copenhagen, Denmark
The program includes a scenic canal cruise departing from Copenhagen’s historic Nyhavn neighborhood, known for its colorful 17th-century townhouses and lively waterfront atmosphere. As the boat glides through the city’s network of canals, students will see landmarks such as the iconic Little Mermaid statue, the modern Copenhagen Opera House, and the striking Black Diamond library. This guided cruise offers a unique perspective on how Copenhagen blends its maritime heritage with contemporary architecture and urban planning, providing students with an engaging lens on the city’s cultural and economic evolution.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Students will visit three iconic sites that highlight the intersection of culture, leadership, and governance. At Christiansborg Palace, home to Denmark’s Parliament, Supreme Court, and Prime Minister’s offices, students will explore how monarchy and democracy have become closely linked in shaping national governance. The journey continues at Amalienborg Palace, residence of the Danish royal family, where ceremonial traditions stand alongside the practical roles of a modern European monarchy. Finally, at Rosenborg Palace, once a private royal residence and now a museum housing the Danish Crown Jewels and four centuries of royal treasures, students will reflect on how historical symbols of power and heritage continue to influence contemporary cultural identity.
Sweden
Students will cross the Øresund Bridge by train to Malmö, Sweden, experiencing this remarkable engineering feat and symbol of Danish–Swedish cooperation. The visit begins at Malmöhus Castle, Scandinavia’s oldest surviving Renaissance fortress, followed by free time to explore the city’s highlights. Options include visiting the Turning Torso, Sweden’s iconic twisting skyscraper, or relaxing in Lilla Torg, a historic square filled with cafés and artisan shops. Along the way, students can sample traditional Swedish foods, from classic meatballs with lingonberries to the original Swedish fish candy. This day offers a rich comparison of Danish and Swedish culture, showcasing how neighboring nations balance distinct identities with a shared regional heritage.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Students will have the option to join a group bicycle tour of Copenhagen, experiencing firsthand why cycling is integral to Danish daily life, sustainability, and urban planning. The guided ride will take the group through local neighborhoods and along scenic pathways, including a crossing over the Circle Bridge. Designed by Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, this pedestrian and cycling bridge is both a functional connection across Copenhagen’s canals and a work of public art. They will learn how infrastructure and daily practices embody Danish values of equality, community, and openness.
